Kevlar phone cases are more expensive than standard plastic options, so it is reasonable to ask whether the upgrade is worth the extra cost. After using one daily, I believe it is for most people, although the final decision depends on what you expect from a case.

For those who dislike bulky cases but still want reliable protection, Kevlar offers an excellent balance of strength, slimness, and everyday comfort. However, if your main priority is simply finding an affordable cover and the overall feel is less important, a basic plastic case will provide adequate protection at a lower price.

So what is Kevlar?

Kevlar® is a high-performance aramid fiber developed by DuPont in 1965. It is widely used in demanding applications such as body armor and motorsport safety equipment, and is approximately five times stronger than steel by weight. When woven into a phone case, the material forms a thin, rigid shell that resists everyday knocks, scratches, and scuffs without the added bulk typically associated with high-strength protection.

Why it works so well on a phone?

The key advantage lies in Kevlar’s exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. A Kevlar shell remains rigid and protective while staying remarkably thin. Our DURO® cases start at just 0.65 mm and weigh approximately 11–15 grams, making them barely noticeable in a pocket. The matte, lightly textured surface also provides a secure, comfortable grip while helping to conceal fingerprints, so the case maintains a clean, refined appearance throughout daily use.

Does it block signal or wireless charging?

No — and this is where Kevlar quietly beats carbon fiber. Because aramid fiber is non-conductive, it does not interfere with 5G, cellular reception, NFC, or wireless charging. Carbon fiber may have a similar woven appearance, but its conductive strands can potentially affect wireless performance. For customers who prefer that distinctive woven look, we therefore use non-conductive G10 fiber instead. Our Special Edition and Ring Master cases also feature integrated magnets for full MagSafe compatibility.

Is it actually drop-proof?

Both the DURO® Special Edition and DURO® Ring Master are tested to the U.S. military MIL-STD-810H drop standard and feature raised edges around the screen and camera for added protection.

The original DURO® case sacrifices some impact resistance in favor of the thinnest possible profile. It is designed to protect against everyday drops, scratches, and scuffs, but it is not intended for extreme abuse.

The honest take

Kevlar® cases cost more because genuine aramid fiber is a premium material that is considerably more complex to manufacture than a conventional molded plastic shell. In return, you get a case that is thinner, lighter, more comfortable to hold, and built to last for years—making the cost easier to justify over time.

For those who value long-term durability without unnecessary bulk, the upgrade is well worth considering. Our DURO® cases are made with genuine 1500D DuPont™ Kevlar® and are available for a wide range of devices, including iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Sony Xperia, Google Pixel, iPad, AirPods, and Apple Watch.
