The Philosophy of Kodo Design, the Craft of Mastery: Japanese Brand DeFF's Aluminum Alloy Carbon Fiber Composite Fuel Cap Cover
DeFF, a well-known Japanese phone accessory brand, first made its name in Japan with its aluminum alloy phone bumper frames. Drawing on years of product-making experience, it has now invested R&D resources into automotive tuning parts, launching its first product: an aluminum alloy fuel cap cover. Machined from a solid block of aluminum alloy via precision CNC cutting, and made from A6061 aluminum alloy — a material historically widely used in racing mechanical components.

Design that pays attention to detail
For DeFF, extending its minimalist design language to automotive accessories can satisfy customers (car enthusiasts) who care deeply about product details. During development, the team wanted the forward-thinking design to also carry the atmosphere of racing components, so instead of the ABS resin commonly seen on the market, they opted for the more labor-intensive aluminum alloy. Carbon fiber material manufactured by Japan's Toray was added to the top of the fuel cap cover, and screw-style decorative details were added around the edge, giving the whole piece more of a sports-car look. The surface also underwent anodizing treatment, which effectively prevents the aluminum from oxidizing. Compared to standard methods, the treatment penetrates deeper, making it more resistant to fading or degradation, while also slightly toning down the color's brightness and saturation for a more refined, understated hue.

Simple to install — just place it over the original fuel cap.
To accommodate different vehicle models, DeFF performed 3D scans of fuel caps from various brands and achieved an optimal fit through precise design.

Just use the included double-sided tape to secure it in place.
Given the high temperatures the car body experiences while driving, DeFF used the more heat-resistant 3M Y-4914 strong adhesive tape. After applying, it's recommended to leave the vehicle undisturbed for a while to increase the bond strength. (Note that this double-sided tape (3M VHB) reaches about 60% of its bonding strength within 1 hour, and provides 100% bonding strength after 48 hours — 72 hours in winter.)

Carefully carved from a solid block of aluminum
Made from the same grade of aluminum alloy (A6061) used in DeFF's own phone bumper frames, offering higher strength and superior corrosion resistance compared to the previously used A6063, with about 30% higher tensile and yield strength than A6063. The surface is precision CNC-cut, hand-finished by craftsmen, and treated with a durable colored anodized finish. It weighs approximately 63g.

Planned and designed in Japan
The planning was completed entirely in Japan, with the designer being Mr. Yamagishi of HYT-DESIGN. He graduated from Tama Art University in 2004 with a degree in product design, previously worked as a product designer at a lighting equipment manufacturer, and founded HYT-DESIGN in 2011. Since 2014 he has also served as a part-time lecturer at Tama Art University. His designs have won iF Design Awards, and he currently serves as DeFF's design director.

Having taken a moment to explain the origins of DeFF's aluminum alloy fuel cap cover, let's move on to the unboxing. First, I should mention that besides being a huge Sony fan, I'm also a lover of Japanese car brands. The meticulous spirit of Japanese craftsmen embodies their dedication to their products, which is why, from 2003 to now, I've owned a Mazda 3 (first generation), Mazda 5 (second generation), Mazda CX-5 (first generation), and now a Mazda 6 Wagon (2019). The reason is simply that Mazda's exterior design stands out, and under its core philosophy of Zoom-Zoom driving pleasure and Jinba Ittai (horse-and-rider-as-one) driving feel, the agile handling and comfortable ride have always left a deep impression. But to further optimize suspension and chassis rigidity, I've also added engine mount braces, shorter springs, an intake kit, a new cold air scoop, lower arm braces, and sport brake pads — mainly from Mazda's own MazdaSpeed and AutoExe brands.

For the Mazda 6 Wagon, I additionally purchased AutoExe's aluminum oil cap, aluminum dipstick, aluminum brake fluid cap, battery tie-down bar, and brake fluid reservoir cover, mainly to enhance the car's appearance and boost "spiritual horsepower."

The fuel cap cover from AutoExe is made from ABS resin. It looks fine, but I felt there was still room for improvement. As it happens, I came across DeFF, the phone accessory maker, proposing an aluminum fuel cap cover on a Japanese crowdfunding platform. It received an overwhelming response from Japanese car enthusiasts, reaching a funding rate of 970%, and the design has a very strong sports-car feel.

So after a long wait, I finally got my hands on it.

Carbon fiber material has been added to both sides of the top, enhancing the overall quality feel and adding a sense of lightness.

The DeFF aluminum alloy fuel cap cover is compatible with TOYOTA / LEXUS / MAZDA / SUBARU, but note that some earlier vehicle models may not be compatible. Please confirm whether your fuel cap uses the shape on the left (see image below). DeFF will also soon launch versions specifically for Nissan, BMW, Mini, Audi, VW, Skoda, and Mercedes-Benz. Interested car enthusiasts can keep following Marco's Store.

In addition, in 2022 DeFF sponsored the BUSOU raffinee GT-R No. 34 as well as the Super GT GT300-class KONDO Racing Team Nissan Motor College GT-R No. 56!
