What you don't know about【CLEAVE G10 Bumper CHRONO for Xperia 1 VIII】

DeFF Corporation (President: Toru Araki; Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) is releasing the CLEAVE G10 Bumper CHRONO for Xperia 1 VIII, a bumper made specifically for Sony's Xperia 1 VIII. 

The frame is cut from G10, a glass-epoxy laminate that's light and strong and, unlike metal, barely affects radio signals. We paired it with an A6061 aluminum camera ring and a back plate made from Arclin Kevlar® 1500D aramid fiber. The bumper is certified under Sony's Made for Xperia program.

Why We Moved Away from Aluminum

For a long time, most DeFF bumpers were aluminum. Aluminum is strong and it looks good. The catch is that it's metal, and metal tends to interfere with radio signals. On a phone, where the connection is the whole point, that's a real problem.

So we went looking for something light and tough that wouldn't get in the way of the signal, and landed on G10. With G10 as the main frame, the bumper has no effect on 4G or 5G data, NFC, or Osaifu-Keitai® mobile payments.

MATERIALS

1. The Bumper / frame: G10 glass-epoxy laminate

G10 is made by soaking glass-fiber cloth in epoxy resin, then stacking the layers and curing them under high pressure. It's used for knife and tool handles, circuit boards and precision machine parts. We CNC-machine each bumper frame out of it.

• Strong without the weight. It handles bending, knocks and wear, and stays light.
• Easy on your signal. Unlike metal, it doesn't get in the way of your connection.
• Fine with water. It absorbs almost no moisture, so it won't swell or warp if it gets wet.
• Keeps its shape. Temperature and humidity changes barely affect its size, so it doesn't bend or shrink.
• No rust, no corrosion. It stands up to acids and alkalis.

2. The Camera Ring: A6061 aluminum

An A6061 aluminum camera ring goes around the camera and protects the area around the Xperia 1 VIII's camera unit.

3. The Backplate: Kevlar® 1500D aramid fiber

The back is an aramid fiber plate made from Arclin Kevlar® 1500D, with a twill weave texture. A neodymium magnet is built into the plate.

4. Aluminum buttons: A6061 aluminum

The volume and shutter buttons are crafted from premium aluminum for a tactile feel. Taking inspiration from classic Sony phone designs, the iconic orange shutter button features a subtle textured finish that mimics the feel of a real camera, delivering an authentic shooting experience. Meanwhile, precise cutouts leave the power button (with its built-in fingerprint sensor), USB Type-C port, and 3.5mm headphone jack fully exposed and easily accessible.

DETAILS

1. QuickLock 2: no screws

The bumper goes on with QuickLock 2. No screws, no tools, and nothing interrupting the clean outline. It holds on tight, so we include a remover tool for when you want to take it off.

2. Magnetic accessories and charging

Thanks to the magnet in the back plate, MagSafe and Pixelsnap magnetic accessories work with it. Qi2 and other wireless charging work with the bumper on.

4G and 5G data, NFC and Osaifu-Keitai® all work as usual. You can tap through ticket gates and pay at the register without taking the bumper off.
